What medical problems cause falls?
One in three people over 65 fall each year, often causing concussion, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy [CTE], broken bones, stroke, other injuries, and death. Nighttime falls while going to the bathroom are common.
About 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. Each year, about 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury.

Nocturia; [ Frequent urination at night], “Nocturia is often described as the most bothersome of all urinary symptoms and is also one of the most common. It affects 50 million people in the United States, with 10 million actually diagnosed with nocturia but only 1.5 million receiving specific therapy for it. One in three adults older than age 30 make at least two trips to the bathroom every night, and about 70% of these individuals are bothered by this. Nocturia can be associated with long-term sleep deprivation in addition to the inconvenience that it causes. Nocturia is defined as the need for a patient to get up at night on a regular basis to urinate. A period of sleep must precede and follow the urinary episode to count as a nocturnal void.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK518987/
Night vision problems; The aging cornea and lens in the eye become less clear as we age, causing light to scatter inside the eye, which increases glare. These changes also reduce contrast sensitivity — the ability to discern subtle differences in brightness at night. https://www.allaboutvision.com/over40/night-driving.htm
Age & Presbyopia is the natural decline in visual acuity as we get older. Our pupils don't dilate in dim light or dark areas as much as they once did, allowing less light to enter the eye. The cornea also becomes less flexible and less clear causing more glare from light sources such as headlights or street lights.Jul 23, 2018
